If we have to design slab of less span about 500 mm and we use mild steel bars of 6 dia., sometimes we get spacing more than slab width which does not satisfy the reinforcement criteria. In such cases can we increase the depth of slab instead of providing more reinforcement to achieve economy?

Yes, but sometimes it won't get much space in the distance in the criteria of the slab.
either if we increase the depth then the slab thickness will be more in the Reinforcement
